Meet the Misfits.
The Misfit Toys is a crew brought together by many projects and eras at Burning Man, from Man Kcrew, the Pavilion, the Pier Group, the Temple, and artists and builders from around Black Rock City. We are a mix of professionals and amateurs, artists and makers, architects and electricians, welders and woodworkers.
Mark Deem, Founder
Founder of the Misfit Toys and Lead Artist of ‘Remember When’ and ‘One Tin Soldier’, Mark has been building the Man since 2013 and was a co-lead on ‘The Chain Room’ in HeadMaze 2019.
It was the first Man build, wandering around sweeping sawdust and watching Monkey Boy sanding tick marks and lumber stamps off the Man that Mark learned his most important Big Art lesson. When asked “are you sanding off every mark?” Monkey Boy simply answered “they don’t belong there”.
You might not notice every detail we put in, every mark we sand off. But we do.
And that’s why we do it. That’s how we do it.
